D-17. John 1:4,5 The BIBLICAL UNITARIAN MEANING!

Does John 1:4,5 prove that Jesus is Almighty God Himself in the flesh? Let us begin part 3 of this series of studies on John 1:1-18 by reading John 1:4,5 without any comments.

John 1:4,5.

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 

5.  And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

Now that we have read John 1:4,5, as it is translated in the KJV, I want to ask you a series of questions.

#1. WHO or WHAT was the life of God in? For you see, John 1:4 a says “in him was LIFE.” But it also means “in it was LIFE.”

#2. WHAT does the phrase “is the LIFE” mean? Now, that question is answered for us in John 1:4 b by the phrase, “and the LIFE was or is the LIGHT of men.” In other words, LIFE is the LIGHT given to the humans in the world to TEACH them the WAY to eternal life in the world to come.

#3. WHO is the light of the world?

Let us begin with question number three and work backward to question number 1. We all agree that Jesus is the “light of the world”, according to John 8:12 and John 9:5. So let us go ahead and read those two verses of Scripture. 

John 8:12.  

“Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the LIGHT of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of LIFE.”

John 9:5.  

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

But Jesus is no longer in the world, and now we are the LIGHT of the world and IN us is the light of LIFE.

Please read Matthew 5:14-16.

“YOU are the LIGHT of the world. (Or all who believe in Jesus have the LIGHT of LIFE, the LIGHT of the glorious GOSPEL, according to 2 Corinthians 4:4 that SHINES in the darkness. But even though some people in the darkness do not comprehend the gospel of salvation, we must continue to let the LIGHT of LIFE shine to the world. So then, we are now the LIGHT of the world) A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 

15.  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. 

16.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” 

Now, we all agree that the LIGHT was in Jesus while he was on the earth. And NOW, that same light is in us who believe. And the light of LIFE that is now in us does NOT make us to be Almighty God Himself. So then, just because the LIFE was in him in John 1:4 a does NOT mean that Jesus is Almighty God Himself in the flesh. And neither does it mean that just because LIFE is in the Word that the Word is Almighty God Himself. 

Again, the Greek word “logos” that is translated as the Word in the KJV should have been translated as the word. For you see, the Greek word “logos” always means the spoken word of prophecy and or the written word of Almighty God which is an it and NEVER means a person. So in my opinion, the Greek word “logos” should be translated as the word whit a lower case “w” and NEVER as the Word with a capital “W”.

For you see, the life or the WAY to eternal life was in the word, and not that life is the word itself. So then, in TRUTH, the sound Biblical meaning of John 1:4,5 is that the WAY to eternal life is to believe and obey the WORDS that Jesus TAUGHT to his disciples in the New Testament. And LIFE is in the word of TRUTH of God to those who BELIEVE.

So to me, the Biblical Unitarian meaning of John 1:4,5 has two possible meanings.

#1. The phrase “In the word was LIFE” could mean that in the spoken word of PROPHECY itself is the SOURCE of LIFE that brought the human Jesus into existence by God performing His own spoken word of PROPHECY to bring it to pass. And that LIFE that God created was created by God to become the LIGHT of the world.

#2. The phrase “In the word was LIFE” could mean that in the word of prophecy that God made FLESH was LIFE, in that, the LIFE is in the message of the LIGHT of the glorious gospel given to Jesus by his God and Father to bear witness that the Father is the only true God. For you see, Almighty God the Father GAVE Jesus the power and the authority after the cross to give us who believe eternal life in the world to come.

So, to ME, John 1:4,5 does NOT prove that Jesus is Almighty God Himself in the flesh. To read part 4 of this series of study on John 1:1-18, please click on the link “D-12.
