The Word Was a God!

All Christians agree 100% that there is only one CREATOR God who is ALSO the Almighty God, the Most High, the Highest.

And all Christians 100% agree that Jesus is the Son of Almighty God, and that Almighty God is called the Father.

And all Christians 100% agree that the FLESH in John 1:14 is speaking of Jesus.

And all Christians 100% agree that Almighty God the Father calls Jesus “O God” in Hebrews 1:8.

But the controversy among Christians is the “interpretation” of the FACT that Jesus is CALLED O God in Hebrews 1:8.

In other words, Christians interpret Hebrews 1:8 DIFFERENTLY. And thus, those different interpretations have caused controversy as to what Hebrews 1:8 TRULY means.

Some Christians argue that the ONE Almighty Creator God is ONE person, the Father Himself. And they believe that the Father Himself BECAME flesh. And, to THEM, Jesus is one and the self-same BEING as the Father.

And due to their reasoning that God cannot stop being God, they thus, conclude that Jesus is Almighty God Himself in the flesh.

Therefore, they also have to conclude that Jesus had TWO natures at the SAME time DURING the days of his FLESH, one divine, and one human.

Other Christians reason that since no man can see God, then it is not possible for the Father to have become flesh, because men have seen Jesus.

And thus, they argue that God the Son BECAME flesh. And, to THEM, Jesus is NOT the Father, but a separate person from the Father who is the unseen “person” of the Trinity Godhead.

And other Christians say no to both of those theories and say that Jesus is the WORKMANSHIP of the ONE God in ONE person who ALONE is the Creator and the God and Father of His Son, Jesus Christ.

And ALL Christians “interpret” John 1:1 c to support what they believe and teach. But, obviously, they all interpret John 1:1 c DIFFERENTLY.

So in this chapter, we will take a look at the Biblical Unitarian interpretation of John 1:1 c. For you see, no matter HOW John 1:1 c in interpreted, the end result is still the SAME.

Jesus is the WORKMANSHIP of Yahweh the Creator!

Let us begin by reading John 1:1 in the LIGHT of what we have learned in  chapters 6 and 7. I will add what we learned within the comments of John 1:1 below written in a paraphrased version of my own.

John 1:1 paraphrased in the LIGHT of God’s word.

“In ANOTHER beginning was the SAYING, and the SAYING was TOWARD THE God, and the SAYING was theos.”

Now, the Greek word “theos” can mean the Almighty God who alone is the Creator.

It can also mean gods who are under and subject to Yahweh who SET them to be gods.

It can mean false idol gods.

And the Greek word “theos” can mean a god under and subject to his God and Father.

So then, if the phrase “the SAYING WAS God” is interpreted to mean that since the words that God SPEAKS are SPIRIT, and God is a SPIRIT, then the Word MUST also be Almighty God Himself, who is Spirit.

So, let us assume that this is the God intended meaning of John 1:1 c as the Oneness Pentecostal Christians dogmatically demand that it MUST mean, without fail.

Also, let us suppose that the SAYING that became FLESH means the SPIRIT itself became FLESH.

And let us suppose that since the Spirit is God, then that must mean the God HIMSELF became FLESH.

That is their logic and their line of reasoning, NOT mine!

And thus, they conclude from their line of REASONING that God cannot stop being God, that Jesus had to have had TWO NATURES at the SAME time during the days of his flesh, one divine and one human.

But here is the problem with that line of reasoning and that conclusion, which is that God Himself BECAME flesh and REMAINED fully God at the same time.

Everything that exists, except for Yahweh Himself, was created by Yahweh speaking forth His word out from His mouth, including the Word that was MADE FLESH in John 1:14.

Hebrews 11:1

“Through faith WE UNDERSTAND that the worlds were framed by the word of God, (Which by the way, the word in this verse is NOT capitalized to make it seem as if the word is a separate person of a Trinity Godhead.

It is the SAME Greek word “logos” used in John 1:1 and in John 1:14.

And thus, it is the SPOKEN word that came forth out from the mouth of Yahweh to create the worlds) so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

And thus, by that SAME line of reasoning that God cannot stop being God when God BECAME flesh, then that MUST ALSO mean that when God spoke His Word and the Word became a TREE, then all trees must also FULLY God as well.

But we all know that what the word becomes is NOT fully God Himself in the form of what God MADE.

Notice that John 1:1 c says, the Word WAS God, and NOT that the Word is God. So then, the Word that WAS God BEFORE the Word became a tree.

And after the Word was made to become a TREE, that PARTICULAR Word is no longer God Himself.

But rather, it is simply a tree MADE by God speaking forth His word, which is SPIRIT.

Now, the LIFE that was in the Word is now in the TREE, but that does NOT make the tree to be the WORD. But rather, the tree WAS the Word before the Word became the tree.

And when the tree dies, the breath of LIFE, which is Spirit, returns to God, the SOURCE of ALL life, as in, mortal life, plant life, animal life, and eternal life.

Now, the Oneness Pentecostal Christian argue that Jesus being in the IMAGE of the invisible God means that Jesus is Almighty God Himself in the flesh.

And their line of reasoning is that WITHOUT a visible image of Yahweh, then man could not know and understand that there is a God who created them.

Therefore, to THEM, God prepared Himself a BODY to dwell in. And thus, to them, Jesus is the Father, and the Father is Jesus, because the Father dwells in the BODY of Jesus.

First of all, Hebrews 10:5 does NOT say that God prepared Himself a body. But rather, it says that God prepared Jesus a body, speaking of the new GLORIFIED immortal body that will never die. Click the link above to read the Verse Study on Hebrews 10:5.

Secondly, Romans 1:18-20 clearly teaches us that all humans are WITHOUT an EXCUSE. For you see, God is MANIFESTED or clearly made KNOWN by what God has CREATED.

Romans 1:18-20.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. 

Romans 1:19. Because, that which may be KNOWN of God is MANIFEST by them; (Or more correctly translated, God is MANIFESTED to them) for God has SHOWN it unto them. 

Romans 1:20. For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are WITHOUT EXCUSE:”

Therefore, God did NOT make the Son of MAN, Jesus, in His IMAGE for the purpose of humans to understand that God exists.

So, to me, NONE of the logic and interpretations of the Oneness Pentecostal Christians make any sense.

Plus, their interpretations CONTRADICT other verses of Scripture in the Bible, such as Numbers 23:19 and Hosea 11:9

For you see, both of these verses CLEARLY teach the God is NOT a MAN nor is God the Son of MAN.

And Jesus is clearly the Son of MAN that men have indeed SEEN and have understood to be the Christ, the Son of the Living and unseen God.

So then, I do agree that the phrase, and the Word WAS God, MIGHT have been intended to possibly mean that the word was THE God, as in, the word is SPIRIT.

But if that is the case, it is also made perfectly clear that the Almighty God is the Creator who SPEAKS His word out from His own mouth to create all that has been created.

And without God speaking His word, nothing would have been created.

However, I myself lean toward the interpretation of the word in John 1:1 as being a “specific” word that was TOWARD the Almighty God.

In other words, what I mean by a specific word is that the PROPHECY is a God who would be SEATED at the right-hand side of the Almighty God. 

To me, that is the God intended meaning of John 1:1 c in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God.

The SAYING was a God under and subject to his God and Father. But first, the prophecy was MADE FLESH. And then, the Son of MAN was GIVEN to die on the cross. And then, God HIGHLY EXALTED His human Son to become an IMMORTAL Deity after the cross and resurrection.

And that is the interpretation that I want you to closely consider as being the God intended sound Biblical meaning of John 1:1 c.

And here is WHY I believe that John 1:1 c should be TRANSLATED as, “and the SAYING was a god.”

First of all, there are many PROPHECIES that clearly teach us that Yahweh’s Messiah would be called by the NAME or TITLE of God.

For example, Isaiah 9:6,7 teaches us that WHEN the government shall be laid on his shoulders, his NAME SHALL be CALLED the Mighty God.

And, in Isaiah 62:2-5, there is another prophecy that says Yahweh will give His Messiah a NEW NAME.

And that prophecy also says that Jesus will be a crown of glory and a Royal Diadem in the hand of Yahweh, the God of Jesus, who will rejoice over His King of kings and Lord of lords.

Let us go ahead and read that prophecy of the Messiah.

Isaiah 62:2-5

“And the Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory: and you shall be CALLED by a NEW NAME, which the mouth of the LORD shall NAME. 

Isaiah 62:3. You shall also be a crown of glory in the HAND of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the HAND of your God. 

Isaiah 62:4. You shall no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall your land any more be termed Desolate: but you shall be called Hephzibah, (Which means My delight) and your land Beulah: (Which means to be married and to be master) for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. (In other words, WE shall be JOINT-HEIRS with Jesus and we shall RULE and REIGN WITH Jesus over the earth during the world to come)

Isaiah 62:5. For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you: and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.”

So then, as you can plainly see, Yahweh is NOT one and the self-same BEING as His Messiah. But rather, Yahweh is the God of His Messiah. 

So again, as we have already learned in chapter 7, the Messiah is the WORKMANSHIP of the hand of Yahweh, the FULFILLMENT of the PROPHECY, spoken out of the mouth of Yahweh. And then, the prophecy was fulfilled or PERFORMED by Yahweh to bring His word of prophecy to past.

Now, all of the fuss and controversy is over the “erroneous” INTERPRETATION that there is just ONE God.

I say “erroneous”, because all of the verses of Scripture which clearly state as a FACT that there is but ONE God, are INTENDED to mean that to us, speaking of us who are Christians, there is only ONE God, who alone in the Father.

And to us as Christian there is also only ONE Lord who is Jesus Christ.

Let us go ahead and read that verse of Scripture.

1 Corinthians 8:6.

“But to us there is but ONE God, the Father, of whom are ALL things, and WE in Him; and ONE Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are ALL things, and WE by him.” 

Now, all of the words in light green are NOT in the original Greek text.

Plus, there are two words that were NOT translated in the KJV, but they were translated in the LITERAL translation of the Textus Receptus.

ALSO, there are three words that should be more correctly translated.

So then, the translation below is the more correct translation without any ADDED words.

“But to us, ONE God, the Father, of whom THE ALL, and WE into Him. And ONE Lord Jesus Christ, BECAUSE OF whom THE ALL, and WE in him.”

Now, this more correct literal translation makes it perfectly clear that the word “ALL” is referring to THE ALL who BELIEVE are placed INTO the Father because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross. 

And thus, THE ALL who BELIEVE are created in Jesus Christ by Yahweh the Father, according to Ephesians 2:10, 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, and the PROPHECY in Psalm 102:18. 

Therefore, the word “things” should have never been ADDED by the translators. 

Now, the KJV was at least honest enough to place SOME of the ADDED words in ITALICS, but the translators were not completely honest to place to word “things” in italics to let the readers know that it was ADDED.

Here is the same verse from the Lexham English Version, which was honest enough to place the word [things] in brackets so that the readers would know that it was added.

1 Corinthians 8:6 from the Lexham English Version.

“Yet to us [there is] one God, the Father, from whom [are] all [things], and we [are] for him, and [there is] one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom [are] all [things], and we [are] through him.”

So again, without the added word things, we can clearly see that the word ALL is referring to us who BELIEVE, and that we are created in Jesus by Almighty God the Father.

Now, while we are on this subject of the ADDED word “THINGS” NOT being placed in italics in the KJV, please know and understand that the word “things” was ALSO ADDED in John 1:3 and many other verses of Scripture, which I will explain in the next chapter.
