Hebrews 2:14

Out of the Mouth of Two or Three Witnesses!

Bible scholars use the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 13:1 to teach us that we need at least two passages of Scripture to support a church doctrine. Paul said, out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, let every word be established.

Now, Christadelphian Christians do use two passages of Scripture to TRY to support their church doctrine that the Devil is NOT a REAL BEING.

However, the verses that they use are “CONTRASTING” verses, and not verses saying the same thing. Let us go ahead and read a quote from a Christadelphian website on what they believe, so that you can see what I am saying. The emphasis is mine.

“Jesus destroyed the devil. So the devil is “dead“, or at the very least will be destroyed by the time the work of Jesus is finished. But there are two remarkable points about this statement in Hebrews 2:14.”

At least they expounded a little more to honestly say that the devil SHALL be destroyed at the end, and not yet destroyed at the cross. 

“The apostle distinctly says that in order to destroy the devil, Jesus partook of human nature. Now is not this an astonishing thing? If Jesus’ purpose was to destroy a powerful enemy, would he not have done far better to have had a strong, immortal nature like the angels? What was he doing sharing the weak nature of flesh and blood? Obviously there is a mystery here that needs explaining.”

I agree that human LOGIC would assume that the Messiah would be a Mighty Warrior in order to be able to defeat a POWERFUL enemy like Satan, the Devil. But the CAUSE OF the WAR in heaven is what Yahweh desires to defeat. 

For you see, when Yahweh PREPARED the fire for the Devil and his angels, He could have destroyed the fallen angles right then and there. But the anointed Cherub, Lucifer, BLAMED God for the war since God created the angels. And thus, according to LYING Lucifer, the father of LIES, God must have created him with an evil NATURE.

Please read the related studies linked at the end of this Verse Study for the sound Biblical answer for WHY Jesus was made a little LOWER than the angels.

“But that is not all. The apostle distinctly says that the way Jesus destroyed the devil was “through death”. Now this can only mean through his own death. What an extraordinary way to get rid of a powerful enemy, by dying oneself!

From these two points, that in order to put an end to the devil, Jesus first shared weak human nature and then had to die himself, it is clear that “the devil” of the Bible must be something quite different from the idea of the devil usually held.”

Only if one READS into the Scriptures that the Devil MUST mean something different than the Devil being a REAL literal BEING created by God who CORRUPTED himself.

“When you come across a Bible passage difficult to understand, it always helps to find another one saying much the same thing, though in different terms. The two passages will throw light on one another.”

So far, this ONE paragraph is good advice, EXCEPT for the wording of different TERMS. Yes, we should always COMPARE Scripture with Scripture to see if the “interpretation” of one verse of Scripture AGREES with other Scriptures. But, if the “interpretation” does NOT agree with other Scriptures, then it is NOT the CORRECT interpretation. So, throw it away and find the CORRECT interpretation.

 “Now there is such a passage to help us in this case. The same apostle, in the same letter, in Hebrews chapter 9, is writing about the work of Christ. He refers to his first coming (which led to his death on the cross) like this:

That is to say, to help the Christadelphian “interpretation” that the TERM devil means SIN. But that is NOT helping the TRUTH based upon the WHOLE word of Almighty God. 

But rather, it is changing the truth into a LIE. The Devil does not want Christians to KNOW that he is a REAL BEING, because they would RESIST him and NOT blame God for the evil things in their life.

“But (Jesus) . . . has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” (verse 26).

We notice at once that one of the things said here is the same as in Hebrews 2:14. “By the sacrifice of himself” clearly means the same as “through his own death”. So probably the other terms mean the same thing. Let us set them out side by side:

Through his death = sacrifice of himself.

Therefore, the other MUST ALSO be the same.

Destroy the devil = put away SIN.

From this valuable parallel comment we learn that “destroying the devil” is the same as “putting away sin”. The devil, then, must be a way of referring to that human. rebellion against God which the Bible calls sin.”

NO! That is reading into the Scriptures a preconceived belief.

Sin is the WORK of the Devil and NOT the Devil himself. And here is the PROOF!

1 John 3:7.  

“Little children, let no man DECEIVE you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 

1 John 3:8. He that commits SIN is OF the devil; for the devil SINS from the beginning. (How can the Devil be sin when the Devil himself SINS. And how can the Devil be SIN when SIN of OF the Devil? 

Plain and simple, sin is a WORK of the Devil and NOT the Devil himself) For THIS PURPOSE the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the WORKS OF the devil. 

1 John 3:9. Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

1 John 3:10. In this (Speaking of those who do NOT WORK iniquity) the children of God are manifest, and ( In this, speaking of those who do WORK iniquity and manifest as) the children of the devil: whosoever does NOT righteousness is NOT of God, neither he that loves NOT his brother.”

The Apostle John is contrasting God with the Devil, the children of God with the children of the devil, and the WORKS of righteousness with the WORKS of the Devil.

 So again, the answer is NO! Hebrews 2:14 does NOT prove that the Devil is the SAME thing as SIN, just so Christadelphians can say that the Devil is NOT a REAL literal BEING.

At the end of their article, they ask the question, “Why does is MATTER?”

In other words, why does it matter if the Devil is REAL or NOT real?

Here is the Christadelphian answer.

“Does it really matter whether we understand this? Yes, it does, for two reasons at least.

First, if the Bible is really teaching us that the devil and Satan stand in general for human sin in all its activities, then that is what God wants us to know. It is a truth revealed in His Word, the Bible, and we ought to want to understand it; we ought not to be content to be misled by false ideas common in the world.

Second, the reason why God has expressed this truth in His Word is that it makes a great difference to us. Consider a moment: if we have the idea that our weaknesses and failures in the sight of God are due to the subtle influence of some supernatural evil spirit outside of ourselves, are we not going to be tempted to make excuses for ourselves? Shall we not be inclined to say, “Well, it wasn’t my fault — the devil tempted me . . .”

Putting the blame for our sin on to somebody else is something the Bible never allows us to do. It is absolutely essential that we should understand our natural state in the sight of God. As the Apostle Paul put it so powerfully: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). To understand the Bible teaching about the devil and Satan is a great help in accepting this truth.”

And NOT all humans have been born with a SINFUL NATURE. Our “natural state” is NOT to sin. Romans 1:25-32 clearly teaches us that some people have CHANGED the NATURAL use of the body to an UNNATURAL use that is NOT our NATURE.

Romans 1:25-32.

“Who CHANGED the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 

Romans 1:26. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did CHANGE the natural use into that which is against NATURE: 

Romans 1:27. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 

Romans 1:28. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 

Romans 1:29. Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 

Romans 1:30. Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 

Romans 1:31. Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 

Romans 1:32. Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” 

And in Romans 2:14, the Gentiles who did NOT have the Law of Moses KEPT the law of God in their CONSCIENCE.

ALSO, the line of reasoning that blaming the Devil might lead Christians to SIN has no foundation in the Scriptures.

First of all, where in the Bible does it say that God never allows us to put the blame on someone else.

Did God say to Adam when Adam BLAMED Eve, Adam, I will NOT ALLOW you lay the blame on your wife.

And when Eve BLAMED the serpent, did God say, EVE, I will NOT ALLOW you to lay the blame on the serpent.

God punished all THREE, Adam, Eve, AND the serpent. And thus, the TEMPTER must be a REAL BEING who spoke to Eve’s mind to entice her to disobey God.

So then, it did not MATTER to God if Eve BLAMED the Devil for her sin of disobedience, God still punished her as the part of His plan of salvation, which He kept SECRET from His ENEMY, the dragon, that old SERPENT called the Devil and Satan in Revelation 12:7-9.

Now, as far as the question or concern of Christadelphians that Christians MIGHT sin MORE, if they can BLAME a REAL literal Satan for tempting them, is the weakest CARNAL, man-made reasoning that I have ever heard. 

No true born-again Christian looks for a way to SIN in hopes of getting away with it. That kind of thinking comes from CARNAL Christians and unsaved people raised in a church denomination.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4.  

“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 

1 Corinthians 3:2. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto you were not able to bear it, neither yet now are you able. 

1 Corinthians 3:3. For you are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 

1 Corinthians 3:4. For while one says, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are you not carnal? 

Romans 8:5-9.

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 

Romans 8:6. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 

Romans 8:7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 

Romans 8:8. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 

Romans 8:9. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God DWELLS in you. Now if any man has NOT the Spirit of Christ, he is NONE of his. 

And Christadelphians teach that the gifts of the Holy Spirit have CEASED.

And thus, if that was TRUE, then the Holy Spirit does NOT DWELL in ANY Christian today, according to the way Christadelphians INTERPRET the Scriptures.

None of the gifts provided for one member to pass on gifts to other members. Only the apostles were able to do this (see Acts 8:14-18).
We do not know precisely when the bestowal and operation of the gifts ceased to happen, but it was probably some time after the death of the last surviving apostle. 

And if Christadelphians TRULY believe that LIE of Satan, the Devil, then they do NOT HAVE the Holy Spirit DWELLING in them. For you see, the CONFESSION of their faith is that the gifts of the Holy Spirit CEASED, because ONLY the Apostles of Jesus could give the Holy Spirit to other Christians. And, according to Romans 8:9, they are NONE of God’s children.

So then, not only do the Christadelphians not believe that Satan, the Devil, is a real being, they also wrongly believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit CEASED with the death of the Apostle John. And they also wrongly believe that Christians who die do NOT go to heaven, but rather, their soul stays with their dead body in the grave.

But that is NOT what the Bible ITSELF teaches us. Please read all of the studies that I have written on WHY the doctrine of soul sleep is NOT Biblical. Begin with the study Aa-6 The ERRORS of Soul Sleep #1.

Now, the Christadelphian Christians, as well as, some other church denominations, such as the Roman Catholic Church, sincerely, but wrongly believe in the FALSE doctrine or original sin. And thus, they build their other man-made doctrines upon the false doctrine of every person being born with a so-called sinful NATURE.

Again, once Christians understand the REASON that Yahweh CREATED the Son of MAN, Jesus, was to have DOMINION over the work of Yahweh’s hands. 

And that you understand that the REASON that Yahweh did that is to STILL His ENEMIES, Satan and the fallen angels. 

Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become a Lord, a King, and a God, to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
