Does the Old Man of the Flesh Mean Sinful Nature?

Some Christians believe and teach that all humans are BORN with a sinful NATURE and that all human being sin because it is in their NATURE to sin.

But the Bible itself teaches us that we GO ASTRAY, we DEPART from the Lord, and we CORRUPT our ways. And that means that we are born innocent and pure and then we LEARN bad behavior by listening to the DECEIVER, Satan, the Devil.

And Romans 6:6 is part of a teaching by the Apostle Paul showing us how to be set FREE from the slavery of sin. Let is read Romans 6:6 in its CONTEXT so that you can clearly see that this verse is NOT teaching us that we are BORN with a NATURE that causes us to sin.

Romans 1:1-14.

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 

Romans 6:2. God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (Clearly, we as Christians are called by God to NO LONGER continue to live in sin)

Romans 6:3. Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? (Or do you not know that when we were baptized, we consider ourselves being DEAD to sin?)

Rom 6:4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 

Romans 6:5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 

Romans 6:6. Knowing this, that our OLD man is crucified with him, THAT (Or in order that) the body of sin might be destroyed, THAT (Or so THAT) henceforth we should not serve sin. (And thus, the OLD man is DEAD and it has no power over our NEW MAN)

Romans 6:7. For he that is DEAD is FREED from sin. (But the Christians who WRONGLY teach that we all have a sinful NATURE do NOT BELIEVE verse 7. They do not believe that they are FREE from the bondage of sin. Rather, they wrongly believe that they have to sin every day because that is their NATURE. And thus, they have been DECEIVED by seducing spirits and doctrine of devils, according to 1 Timothy 4:1,2)

Romans 6:8. Now if we are DEAD with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: (In other words, TRULY being DEAD with Christ is LIVING without sin. And when we live without sin we shall ALSO LIVE with Jesus having eternal life as he has been given eternal life from the Father)

Romans 6:9. Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies no more; death has no more dominion over him. 

Romans 6:10. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he lives, he lives unto God. 

Romans 6:11. Likewise reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but (Or moreover) alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 

Romans 6:12. Let NOT sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in the lusts thereof. 

Romans 6:13. Neither yield you your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 

Romans 6:14. For sin shall NOT have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace.”

So then, the Bible ITSELF teaches us to NOT CONTINUE to live in sin, and that sin does NOT have any more DOMINION over us.

But some Christians wrongly teach the exact opposite CLAIMING that what they teach is what the Bible teaches.

However, they have taken verses of Scripture OUT of their CONTEXT, and they only focus on certain parts of those verses as well. Let us read a quote from the website called Got Questions. 

And then I will do a Verse Study on each and every one of the verses that they use to TRY to prove that all humans are BORN with a so-called sinful NATURE that we supposedly inherited from Adam and Eve.

Please understand that I am NOT singling out any particular ministries. But rather, I am simply showing my readers HOW to rightly divide the word of TRUTH to correctly interpret the Scriptures. I only give a link to that website so that you can do your own research.

Now, in TRUTH, what we actually inherited from Adam and Eve is our CONSCIENCE to KNOW right from wrong! Here is the quote from that website that teaches the doctrine called “Total Depravity”. The emphasis is mine and my comments are in parenthesis.

The flesh-and-blood existence we lead on this earth is shaped by our sinful, corrupt nature.

The sin nature is universal in humanity. All of us have a sinful nature, and it affects every part of us. (And ny all of us, they mean even babies, toddlers and young children, because they teach we are all BORN with this so-called sinful NATURE that supposedly shapes the life we live)  This is the doctrine of total depravity, and it is biblical. 

All of us have gone astray (Isaiah 53:6). Paul admits that “the trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin” (Romans 7:14). Paul was in his “sinful nature a slave to the law of sin” (Romans 7:25). 

Solomon concurs: “Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, / no one who does what is right and never sins” (Ecclesiastes 7:20). 

The apostle John perhaps puts it most bluntly: “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8).

Even children have a sin nature. David rues the fact that he was born with sin already at work within him: “Surely I was sinful at birth, / sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5). Elsewhere, David states, “Even from birth the wicked go astray; / from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies” (Psalm 58:3).

Where did the sin nature come from? Scripture says that God created humans good and without a sinful nature: 

“God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). 

However, Genesis 3 records the disobedience of Adam and Eve. By that one action, sin entered into their nature. They were immediately stricken with a sense of shame and unfitness, and they hid from God’s presence (Genesis 3:8). 

When they had children, Adam’s image and likeness was passed along to his offspring (Genesis 5:3). The sin nature manifested itself early in the genealogy: the very first child born to Adam and Eve, Cain, became the very first murderer (Genesis 4:8).

From generation to generation, the sin nature was passed down to all of humanity: (That is to say, according to THEIR “interpretation” of ONLY the specific selected verses that they have taken OUT of the CONTEXT and read their own personal interpretation into those verses)

“Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way, death came to all people, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). 

This verse also presents the unsettling truth that the sin nature leads inexorably to death (see also Romans 6:23 and Ephesians 2:1).

Now that you have heard THEIR side of this controversial subject, I implore all my readers to read ALL of the Verse Studies that I have written on this subject. I have written these studies to expose the ERRORS of their interpretation of the verse of Scripture that they use to try to prove that all humans are BORN with a DEPRAVED sinful NATURE. 

So, be sure to read the study on Ephesians 2:3. In that Verse Study, I will cover the ONE verse that supposedly proves that the word “NATURE” in the Bible means all humans are BORN with a DEPRAVED, as in, TOTALLY DEPRAVED sinful NATURE. Here is another quote from their website. Again, the emphasis is mine.

The total depravity of man is seen throughout the Bible. Man’s heart is “deceitful and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9). The Bible also teaches us that man is born dead in transgression and sin (Psalm 51:5, Psalm 58:3, Ephesians 2:1-5). 

And according to THEIR corrupted interpretation of the Scriptures, ALL babies who die go to the lake of fire to be destroyed for we are all born as babies, supposedly born DEAD in transgression and sin.

My conclusion of this Verse Study is that the TRUE sound Biblical God intended meaning of Romans 6:6, when it is correctly translated and correctly interpreted in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God, is that it does NOT teach that we were BORN with a sinful NATURE.

Please be sure to read the Verse Study on Ephesians 2:3 to learn HOW people come into have the NATURE of DISOBEDIENT children who WALK after the prince of the AIR, the spirit who now WORKS in the children that remain disobedient.

So again, no human is BORN with a sinful NATURE, but rather, we LEARN to corrupt our own minds and harden our own hearts to SIN against of conscience to FALL short of the glory of God BECAUSE we all have SINNED at one time or another in our life.

And it was Satan, the DEVIL who entices us to SIN.

Now sadly, Christadelphian Christians do NOT believe that Satan, the Devil, is a REAL literal BEING. And the Christadelphian Christians ALSO wrongly believe, as well as, some other church denominations, that God created EVIL and that Yahweh is the CAUSE of all of the EVIL in the world. 

Plus, Christadelphian Christians, as well as other church denominations such as the Roman Catholic Church, sincerely, but wrongly believe in the FALSE doctrine or original sin. And thus, they build their other man-made doctrines upon the false doctrine of every person being born with a so-called sinful NATURE.

Again, once Christians understand the REASON that Yahweh CREATED the Son of MAN, Jesus, was to have DOMINION over the work of Yahweh’s hands. 

And that you understand that the REASON that Yahweh did that is to STILL His ENEMIES, Satan and the fallen angels. 

Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become a Lord, a King, and a God, to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
